The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a telephone scam that has surfaced this week. Sheriff’s Lieutenant Cameron McGee says the caller claims they are with the sheriff’s office. “People are getting phone calls reporting they are getting calls from someone identifying themselves as an officer with the sheriff’s office reporting there’s a warrant out for their arrest for failing to show up for jury duty,” McGee told WFDL news. “They’re requiring these people get PayPal cards and either call them on the phone, give numbers and things like that. Its all a scam.” McGee says a Fond du Lac resident said they were ripped off to the tune of $200. McGee says the scammer makes it appear that it is a local call. “It appears on caller ID like its a local number with a 920 exchange. I called the number and it seems to go through a series of switches which tells me based on my experience this is probably a spoof number.”
