The winter freeze has come just in time as Fond du Lac, WI celebrates the 200 million year history of the prehistoric fish with its first annual STURGEON SPECTACULAR – A Celebration of Winter. And really big fish. – February 12-14, 2016. The Sturgeon Spectacular grew from the wish to continue the time-honored sport of sturgeon spearing into a gathering of friends, family and visitors in Fond du Lac and the Lake Winnebago region. The event will take place on and off the lake and will include a new and unique event for Lake Winnebago – an outdoor hockey game, as well as ice kiting, fireworks, and more. Plus, the Downtown District will host FREE entertainment, food specials, and a chili crawl. On the ice Sturgeon Spectacular activities include:

“Fond du Lac’s location at the Foot of Lake Winnebago, one of the country’s largest inland lakes, supplies our destination with year-round activities including the popular sturgeon spearing season,” said Craig Molitor, President and CEO of the Fond du Lac Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. “I have always loved the way the season’s opening weekend lent itself to family fun, the celebration of decades old traditions, and just the right amount of quirky activities. This year several of us throughout town came together and said let’s make this celebration official, hence Sturgeon Spectacular. A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
