1-27-16 dodge county sheriff says proposed owi laws a good start

todayJanuary 27, 2016

The Dodge County Sheriff says a bill that would impose tougher penalties on repeat drunken drivers is a good step.  The proposal would make a fourth offense a felony punishable by up to three years in prison regardless of when the charge is filed.  Right now, a fourth offense is a felony only if it’s committed within five years of a third offense.  Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt says more an more owi arrests are not alcohol-related.  “You see owi, everybody thinks alcohol.  We’re seeing more and more of these offenses are drug-related, marijuana or heroin or cocaine related,”  Schmidt told WFDL news.  The Senate passed the proposal on a voice vote last week.  The bill goes next to the Assembly.
