The author of a bill that would provide a free college education for students in Wisconsin says she believes the state could afford it. Democratic state representative Melissa Sargent says she doesn’t have the cost impact…but says its about setting priorities. Sargent says 70 percent of students are borrowing money to go to college and leave school with an average debt of $29,000. Sargent says the program would apply to college in the UW system and state technical colleges. Under the plan if students maintain a 3.0 gpa and work in Wisconsin for at least three years after graduating they would have their tuition, living expenses, student fees and textbooks paid for. Sargent says Tennessee and Oregon have passed similar measures. Sargent was a guest on AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program.
