1-29-16 survey finds high radon levels in fdl county

todayJanuary 29, 2016

A survey through the  UW-Fond du Lac Extension Office shows that eleven municipalities in Fond du lac County have average radon levels that exceed the EPA’s safety limit.  Extension agent, Diana Tscheschlok, says the EPA limit is four pico Curies per liter.  The city of Fond du Lac has an average rating of 2.3 pico Curies, but other area municipalities are significantly higher.  Ripon and Eden came in at 7.0, nine in Brandon, 16 pico Curies in Waupun and 16.5 in Fairwater.  Radon gas comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water.  The gas seeps into buildings, especially in basements and ground level rooms and cannot be detected by sight or smell.  Radon testing kits are available for $10 at the Fond du lac County Public Health Department.
