Area library directors say they support a bill that would allow libraries to use police and collection agencies to reclaim overdue materials and collect fines. The bill would carve out an exception to privacy laws that protect the identity of borrowers so libraries could give collectors and police borrowers’ names, contact information and amount owed. Fond du Lac Library director Jon Mark Bolthouse says the proposed bill would provide libraries with clarification on what steps can be taken to reclaim overdue materials.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
