2-20-16 sturgeon season ends on upriver lakes

todayFebruary 20, 2016

WINNECONNE, Wis. (AP) — The sturgeon spearing season is ending on the Upriver Lakes in the Fox Valley.  The Department of Natural Resources says after six days, spearers have taken enough female fish to halt the season on those waterways. The Upriver Lakes of Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts have plenty of fish in shallow water.  A sturgeon weighing nearly 150 pounds was taken on Lake Poygan earlier this week.   About 500 people with a permit spear on the Upriver Lakes compared with about 13,000 on Lake Winnebago where the season is expected to last the full 16 days.  The upriver permits are given through a lottery system.   Rick Zwiers says it took him seven years to get a permit. He speared a 77-pound sturgeon on Thursday.
