2-22-16 dodge county sheriff says tougher owi laws is a “step in the right direction”

todayFebruary 21, 2016

The Dodge County Sheriff says he believes a bill imposing tougher penalties on repeat drunken drivers is a step in the right direction.  The Assembly passed a bill last week that would make a fourth offense a felony regardless of when the charge is filed. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says right now a fourth offense is a felony only if committed within five years of a third.  Under the bill, the DOT would be required to permanently revoke the license of anyone caught driving drunk for a fifth or subsequent offense. The drivers wouldn’t be eligible for occupational licenses but could petition the DOT for reinstatement after 10 years.
