The Waupun police chief says he thinks bills regulating drones is probably a good thing. The state assembly has approved a pair of bills that would impose fines for flying drones over prisons and enhance the penalty for crimes committed using drones. The bill’s authors removed a provision that would have allowed municipalities to establish no fly zones for drones after drone operators and technology advocates testified it would create a patchwork of regulations and clash with federal rules. “Due to new technology there’s always something that’s going to happen,” Waupun police chief Dale Heeringa said. “Usually when they make laws its due to someone’s poor or improper behavior.” Over the Christmas holiday a Waupun man lost control of his drone and it accidentally landed over the Waupun prison walls.
