A Berlin man involved in a chase with police in Fond du lac, Dodge and Green Lake counties observed his 20th birthday Friday learning he won’t be getting any additional prison time. At a hearing Friday Fond du lac judge Robert Wirtz ordered three years probation to the nine year prison sentence Maxwell Decker is already serving. Before he was sentenced Decker apologized for his actions. Judge Wirtz pointed out that in addition to the long sentence he is now serving Decker faces significantly more prison if he were to violate terms of his probation. Police say last August Decker stole four vehicles and led deputies on chases that ended in three separate crashes. Each time Decker fled on foot and stole another vehicle. He was later arrested in Jefferson County.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
