The local unemployment rate is down in the latest reporting period. The state Department of Workforce Development says the jobless rate dropped from 4.9 percent in February to 4.3 percent in March in the city of Fond du Lac. The Dodge County unemployment rate stands at 4.8 percent in March, down from 5.4 percent the month before. Preliminary data the state Department of Workforce Development released Wednesday shows unemployment rates in 30 in the state’s 32 largest cities decreased from February. Unemployment fell in 71 of the state’s 72 counties in March. The only county that saw an increase was Menominee, where unemployment rose from 8.9 percent in February to 9.1 percent in March.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
