MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin state Assembly Republicans want Congress to get rid of unnecessary federal mandates. The group sent a letter Tuesday to U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, urging him to examine burdensome federal requirements and return power to the states. Wisconsin Republicans say requiring the state to regulate emissions and air quality and manage Medicaid programs on behalf of the federal government becomes a “burden of compliance.” At a Tuesday hearing, free market advocates urged members of the Assembly’s new Federalism and Interstate Relations Committee to identify all sources of federal funding and conditions attached before drafting a budget. Gov. Scott Walker has asked President Donald Trump for more state control over how it spends money.
