Construction is expected to begin this spring on the first phase of a major Waupun School District building plan following a successful referendum in November. The Waupun School Board has approved a resolution authorizing the issuance and sale of $26 million in bonds for the first phase of the project. Superintendent Tanya Gubin says she hopes groundbreaking for a new high school track can begin as soon as the ground thaws this spring. Gubin says most of the work that will be done this summer will involve deferred maintenance projects. In addition to the track and tennis courts, the $36 million referendum includes deferred maintenance and safety upgrades, classroom renovation and a new primary school gymnasium.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
