A Fond du Lac man has been charged with two felonies in connection with filing false income tax returns. Adam L. Portman is charged with one count of theft and one count of filing a false income tax return with the intent to evade or obtain a tax credit. Both charges are felonies. If convicted, Portman faces more than nine years in prison and a $20,000 fine. The criminal complaint alleges that Portman filed false income tax returns for 2014 and 2015 by inflating his Wisconsin withholding by $2,000 each year. This resulted in a larger refund than he was entitled to. Portman claims that in both cases he rushed in preparing his taxes and made mistakes in entering the information. The charges against Portman are the result of an investigation and referral by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue’s Office of Criminal Investigation.
