The head of a government watchdog group says Republican lawmakers are wasting taxpayer money by hiring two law firms to represent them in an ongoing legal fight over district boundaries. A panel of federal judges has ordered the legislature to redraw district boundaries after finding the lines unfairly consolidate GOP Power. The attorney general plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, but Republican lawmakers say they want to hire outside counsel to write a friend of the court brief. Common Cause in Wisconsin director Jay Heck says he’s concerned the lawmakers don’t mention how much the firms might cost or cap payments.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
