The Fond du Lac city council has voted in favor of mandatory replacement of private lead water service lines. At their meeeting Wednesday night the council voted five to two in favor of mandating private line replacement when the public line in the street is replaced. Councilmembers Catherine Block and Kay Miller voted against. Miller says she felt residents should have had the option of opting out of the requirement. “Its hard to guess at what may or may not come down the line. That’s where I struggle…what the EPA may or may not do and when they may or may not do it,” Miller told WFDL news. Councilmember Brian Kolstad says the bottom line for him is the health of residents. “Lead, as we’ve seen with Flint, (Michigan) is a major concern and we have lead service pipes in Fond du lac. The sooner we can get them replaced the healthier we will be in the long run.” Public Works director Jordan Skiff says the city will also consider offering filters to residents whose streets are not on the schedule to have public service lines replaced. Skiff says its almost certain that the EPA will make it mandatory in the not so distant future.
