The Fond du Lac Fire Chief says he’s pleased Gov. Scott Walker’s administration has reversed itself and no longer plans to roll back a requirement for fire sprinklers in many new apartment buildings. Chief Pete O’Leary recently testified at a public hearing on the issue in Appleton. O’Leary says it’s a matter of safety. “I think its a smart move on their part,” O’Leary told WFDL news. “In the world of fire protection fire sprinklers give occupants the optimum ability to survive a fire.” The state Department of Safety and Professional Services recently had advanced plans to end a requirement that builders install fire sprinklers in new housing projects with three to 20 units. Agency officials say they are dropping the idea. Meanwhile the department’s deputy secretary, Eric Esser, says no final decisions have been made on a proposal to expand the use of circuit interrupters that prevent fire and electrocution, as an advisory committee recommended last year.
