Less than a week after the Fond du lac city council approved an ordinance mandating private lead water service line replacement, the city has identified the first five projects. Public Works director Jordan Skiff says new private water services would replace existing lead service lines on five streets. Streets on the schedule for private lead service line replacements are portions of 5th and 7th Streets, Ellis Street, North Military Road and Thompkins Street. Skiff says it is all but certain that the EPA will make removal of lead service lines mandatory in the next couple of years. Skiff says the cost for the private portion of the lead service lateral is partially borne by the property owner. The Water Utility received a $300,000 Safe Drinking Water loan to offset some of the cost. Skiff says the bottom line is the health of Fond du lac residents. The Fond du lac Plan Commission is recommending approval.
