Fond du lac city officials are considering a master plan for McDermott Park. The citizen’s group Friends of McDermott Park initiated the plan unveiled at Monday night’s advisory park board meeting. Friends member Janelle Anderson says the plan was developed by a UW Madison landscape architect student as her senior project. One of the recommendations is a multi-use trail that would connect Merrill Avenue and East Johnson Street through the park. Anderson says the Friends will seek donations to support other improvements. “Parks add to the community and when we’re trying to get new businesses in, people to move in here, I think parks add to the quality of life,” Anderson told WFDL news. “…and the diversity of parks. There’s not always just sports going on but there’s a place where you can commune with nature.” Also, the city will erect a McDermott Park sign, to let people know that the public tennis courts are part of the park, and do not belong to neighboring Winnebago Lutheran Academy. The Friends’ effort started a couple years ago when WLA approached the city to use the park for athletic fields and an expanded parking lot. That plan was withdrawn after the Friends group learned a portion of the park is in the city floodplain.
