The Fond du Lac city council has a new president. Karen Merkel was unanimously elected president at the council’s organizational meeting Tuesday. Merkel was first appointed to City Council in May of 2013 to complete a vacant term and elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2016. She replaces Lee Ann Lorrigan. Derek TerBeest was voted in as Council Vice-President.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
