A Republican lawmaker from Oshkosh is circulating a bill requiring voter approval before counties and cities can impose local wheel taxes. State representative Michael Schraa says taxpayers should have a voice in the process when local governments levy a wheel tax to pay for their transportation needs. Schraa says the wheel tax can be hard on working families, especially those with teen drivers. Schraa says the wheel tax is a regressive tax which has a greater impact on the poor than on the wealthy and middle classes.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
