The chairwoman of the state Democratic party says there are several potential candidates who are expected to announce they are candidates for governor. Martha Lanning predicts a strong candidate will emerge to challenge Republican governor Scott Walker in 2018. Lanning says she also thinks Democrats will make gains in the legislature given the recent court rulings regarding the Republican redistricting plan. Democrats gathered for their annual convention last weekend and re-elected Lanning to another two year term despite a disasterous 2016 election. Lanning says the key to bouncing back is for the party to return to its grassroots. Lanning made the comments on AM 1170’s Between the Lines program.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
