7-21-17 keeping cows cool at the fair

todayJuly 21, 2017

Fans and sprinklers are working overtime to keep cows comfortable in the dairy barn at the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds this week.  Dairy and Livestock extension agent, Tina Coleman, says the heat and humidity can quickly take its toll on cows.  “When it gets about 72 degrees cattle start showing signs of distemper from heat and when it (temp) gets higher they start having heat stress,”  Coleman told WFDL news.  Coleman says just like people, cows don’t eat as much when it gets this hot and they don’t produce as much milk.
