8-7-17 Washington County Historical Society Receives Grant

todayAugust 7, 2017

The Washington County Historical Society is receiving a new grant to help house materials from a former leather manufacturing plant.
The local historical society will receive $356,000 as part of a matching grant to help preserve collections from the Enger-Kress Pocketbook Company.
The former company provided jobs to the area from their on-site factory, as well as employing many women at home through sewing and hand tooling work.
It also played a crucial role in World War II, manufacturing millions of items under contract with the U.S. Army.
The plant closed in 2006.
The grant will help provide half the funds needed to properly house items from the collection.
