A Fond du Lac County courthouse security committee is recommending a manned metal detector be installed at the Fond du Lac City-County Government Center. Fond du Lac judge Dale English chairs the committee and will be asking the city and county to jointly fund a staffed security checkpoint with metal detector at the north entrance to the building. All other entrances would be closed. The total cost is estimated at $250,000. English says steps need to be taken now to prevent a potential tragedy from occurring in the future. “If we had an active shooter in that building they could take out ten, 15, 20 people within a matter of minutes,” English told WFDL news. “If that ever happened and our citizens were laying dead or wounded in the courthouse then the money would come flowing in to take care of this. I want to make sure that doesn’t happen and get the money in the front end because I really have a concern.” Judge English says he’s also concerned about the national political rhetoric and recent comments by president Trump following the hate group violence in Virginia. “We have a very toxic and inflammatory environment in this country in general,” English said.
