Valeria Ruiz has been on a hunger strike since Friday. Ruiz is one of an estimated 8.000 DACA recipients in Wisconsin who fear for their future in Wisconsin in the face of president Donald Trump’s announcement that the program will end in six months. “DACA does not have a pathway to citizenship so as a DACA recipient I am not able to apply for citizenship or residency,” Ruiz said. Ruiz joined other immigrant youth at a march Monday evening in Racine urging House speaker Paul Ryan to pass legislation making DACA permanent. The 21 year old Ruiz moved to Wisconsin with her parents when she was three years old. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program shields from deportation young immigrants like Ruiz who were brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents. Christine Neumann-Ortiz is the executive director of the immigrant rights group Voces de la Frontera. “Here you have young people that have gone through our public school system, are grateful for their family’s tremendous sacrifice for them and are giving back to the community.” Neumann-Ortiz and Ruiz made the comments on AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program.
