David Vanderkin is beginning his senior year in high school with a new outlook on life. The 17 year old Waupun High School student has been battling leukemia for the past three years, and underwent his final treatment Monday. David’s mother Heather says her son’s cancer is in remission and doctors are very optimistic about his future. Vanderkin says 30 years ago that probably wouldn’t have been the case. To celebrate, a community fundraiser is being held this weekend with all of the proceeds going to the Make a Wish Foundation. “This is a celebration to mark the end of his treatment and to say you did it,” Vanderkin told AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program. “…really to honor everything he’s gone through.” The celebration/fundraiser will be held this Saturday from 4-11pm at the Waupun Community Center. A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
