A former Waupun prison correctional officer is accused of having sexual contact with an inmate. Melissa Fiedler is charged with second degree sexual assault by correctional staff and delivering illegal articles to an inmate. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 43 years in prison and more than $100,000 in fines. According to a criminal complaint last December Fiedler is accused of performing oral sex on the inmate, and giving her cellphone to the inmate, three months after she was hired as a correctional officer She is scheduled to make her initial court appearance Oct. 9.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
