The new Mayville police chief says he plans to put the past behind him and move forward. Police captain Ryan Vossekuil will be sworn in as chief at a ceremony this Thursday. Vossekuil had been serving as interim chief since April when former chief Chris MacNeill resigned after being charged with felony misconduct in office. Vossekuil rejected the first contract offer from the common council which included a probationary period and would have allowed the council to fire him at any time without just cause. The council restarted negotiations following an online petition with more than 800 signatures from Mayville residents in support of Vossekuil. “That was overwhelming,” Vossekuil told AM 1170’s Between the Lines program. “I will never forget the feeling of walking into the council chambers and seeing 100 people there to petition the government for change.”

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
