Nearly two dozen Wisconsin counties including Fond du Lac say in a federal lawsuit that “nefarious and deceptive” marketing campaigns from pharmaceutical companies are responsible for the nation’s opioid overdose epidemic. The lawsuit filed Tuesday says local governments’ health and law enforcement services “have been strained to the breaking point” because of widespread opioid abuse. Fond du Lac County executive Al Buechel says Fond du Lac County sees the impact from opiods, “…and the amount of people that we know, they’re probably on heroin now but they started on the prescription medication,” Buechel told WFDL news. More than two dozen states, cities and counties have filed similar lawsuits.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
