Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue is partnering with Shriner’s Hospital for Children and local Fond du Lac businesses who are selling Christmas trees to prevent fires. The Shriner’s provided FDL Fire/Rescue fire safety informational ornaments for the live Christmas trees sold in Fond du Lac as a reminder to be fire safe during the holidays. Across the country an estimated 200 home fires began with Christmas trees from 2011–2015. These fires caused an annual average of six deaths, 16 injuries, and $14.8 million in direct property damage. Fond du Lac assistant chief of fire prevention Troy Haase says although Christmas tree fires are rare, when they do occur, they are much more likely to be deadly than most other fires. On average, one out of every 32 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in a death, compared to an average of one death per 143 reported home fires. Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in two of every five home Christmas tree fires. Heating equipment was involved in 15% of the Christmas tree fires. 6% of Christmas tree fires were started by someone playing with fire and candles started 8% of home Christmas tree structure fires.
