More than two dozen people are taking advantage of Fond du Lac County’s only warming shelter during this cold snap. The shelter is located at the Salvation Army Corps Community Center at 237 North Macy Street. Salvation Army’s Ron Jacobsen says the shelter opened in November and will remain open through March 31. Meanwhile, volunteers are needed to help with an accurate count of the homeless in Fond du Lac. The semi-annual Point in Time street count will be conducted during the overnight/early morning hours (11pm to 3am) of Wednesday January 24. The Point in Time count is a nationwide count of homeless individuals. Volunteers are needed to help look for unsheltered homeless individuals and families by surveying “known” locations where unsheltered homeless persons may spend the night, such as parks, parking ramps, campgrounds, truck stops, etc., in an attempt to identify these individuals and families and get them connected to resources. Volunteers will be asked to cover one of several two-hour shifts that night. All volunteers will be provided training prior to the night of the count on data collection. To sign up, contact Susan Tucker, Amber Bose or Tara Tarpey at 920-922-7760.
