MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Department of Natural Resources board has approved new restrictions on manure spreading in eastern Wisconsin. The board approved the package unanimously Wednesday. The vote doesn’t mean the rules are in place. The package would still need the approval of Gov. Scott Walker and the Republican-controlled Legislature. The Wisconsin Dairy Business Association and Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, both powerful lobbying forces in Madison, are pushing against the rules.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
