A Wisconsin company is organizing a gathering in Milwaukee next month on industrial hemp. CDP Therapeutics is hosting the first Wisconsin Hemp Expo March 9 at Serb Hall. For the first time since the late 1950s Wisconsin farmers are able to grow industrial hemp under legislation signed by governor Scott Walker last fall. Fond du Lac native, Derek Cross, is the director of the Hemp Farm USA in Texas. Cross says Wisconsin was once one of the nation’s top hemp producers. Cross says its an opportunity for farmers to diversify their portfolios and help with crop rotation. The state Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection is establishing rules for hemp farmers. Allison Pratt-Szeliga is a researcher with the Michael Fields Agriculture Institute. She says the state will likely form an application process and require farmers to obtain seeds through the department. Industry experts say interested farmers still face barriers to break into the business. The Wisconsin Farm Bureau says farmers won’t be able to rely on selling their crop to the closest grain elevator and will want to have a contract before growing hemp.
