3-1-18 ledger hockey coach honored

todayMarch 1, 2018

As the Fond du Lac  Saint Mary’s Springs Ledger hockey team continues its quest for a state title,  four parents of current players are remembering their championship run more than 30 years ago. Ledger head coach Tim Ahern, John Welsch, Tom Huettle and Dr. Todd Sarauer all played on the Ledger hockey team when they won the state private schools title in the mid 80s.  This week, their sons are on the ice trying to bring a championship back to Fond du Lac.  Ahern says this year’s team is very young, but very talented.  “Its a winning mentality on the coaching staff and its finally come to fruition with this year’s team.”   Welsch’s sons Zach and Brady are on the team and says he now knows what  his parents were experiencing when he was playing. “I attribute some of this to my parents and some of the great coaching we had when we were kids teaching basic building blocks, fundamentals,”  Welsch said.  Huettle says its hard to believe that more than three decades have passed since he laced up the skates.  “I guess I didn’t even realize after being out for so long.  I was talking with Mitchell a couple weeks ago and he was pointing out how long its been, so its quite amazing.”    The Ledgers play perennial powerhouse Hudson in a state quarterfinal match today.  At the Wisconsin State Tournament dinner last night Ahern was named WCHA Coach of the Year and his son Colin was named one of eight finalists for state Player of the Year.
