A new report shows lung cancer rates vary across the country and that Wisconsin can do more to reduce the toll of lung cancer. Donna Wininsky with the American Lung Association in Wisconsin says its interesting that the report shows that while Wisconsin does well in lung cancer survival rates, the state ranks in the lower 25 percent in the number of accredited screening centers and early diagnosis. “That’s kind of surprising to see those things together, that we don’t have the screening centers and the early diagnosis but we actually rank fairly high in terms of overall survival rates. It goes to show there are so many other factors involved,” Wininsky told AM 1170s Between the Lines program. Wininsky says Wisconsin also ranks high in the number of cases where surgical treatment is an option and in the number of new cases reported. The five year lung cancer survival rate is only 19.9 percent in Wisconsin and Wininsky says that’s why early detection is key.
