3-22-18 stem institute’s odyssey of the mind going to world finals

todayMarch 21, 2018

On Saturday, March 17, the STEM Institute ‘s Odyssey of the Mind team earned an invitation to the World Finals by becoming State Champions. The OM team of Mason McGrath, Kennedy George, Jared Ott, Nathan Ott, Ruby Riegert, and Zoe Perkins were awarded this honor after months of hard work and dedication.  The team’s problem, “Emoji, Speak for Yourself,” challenged them to create three-dimensional emojis to be used to communicate the life story of a once famous, but now forgotten, emoji. The team then needed to develop a performance where the emojis demonstrate special functions like growing, turning into a team member, and transforming into a different emoji. Their solution also included a choreographed dance, a technical representation of texting, and sounds to enhance the performance. The twist? No spoken language was allowed.   The students will represent Fond du Lac and the state of Wisconsin at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa on May 21 through May 27.  At the World Finals, they will compete against future world leaders from over 33 countries.  The team’s journey to Ames, Iowa will start with further work on their team-created solution as well as conducting fundraising projects in order to make the trip possible.  Anyone wishing to learn more about the team’s odyssey or aid in financing the trip may contact Archie Barribeau at archiebarribeau@gmail.com or contact the STEM Institute at 906-6722.
