4-19-18 snowstorm puts robins and other birds in danger

todayApril 19, 2018

The Wisconsin state bird and many other birds are in danger as a result of last weekend’s freak snowstorm. Director of the Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory Bill Mueller says the snow cover is preventing robins and other birds from finding food.  “It is pretty serious right now.  Its not unusual for us to have early spring storms like this, but if you cast your memory back,  generally when we have a snowstorm in April the situation resolves itself pretty soon because the weather warms again and the snow melts,”  Mueller told WFDL news.  Mueller says some birds like robins don’t eat seeds.  He says residents can help by clearing a patch in your lawn and offering small fruits for the birds including blueberries or raisins.  Mueller says if some birds can make it through the next couple of days they should be alright.  But he says it’s a different story for birds that rely on insects.
