The Dodge County Sheriff says the County Jail has a projected shortfall of nearly a half million dollars following the closing last month of one of their pods. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says he warned the county board in July about the budget impact of closing the pod at the end of the year. “As predicted, as we mentioned in late summer, we’re going to be at about a $490,000 shortfall,” Schmidt told WFDL news. “That number is not final. It could change a little bit because we’re still working on year end totals.” Schmidt says the county will have to figure out how to make up the difference. There were 108 beds in that Pod. Nine staff positions were cut. The staff cuts saved about $1 million for this year, but the county lost a projected $3 million in federal revenue.
