Republican Congressman Glenn Grothman has introduced a bill that would allow people to personally fund construction of a border wall with Mexico. The People’s Border Wall Fund Act would create an account within the Department of Treasury that would allow public donations be used for the design, construction and maintenance of a border wall. During a stop in Fond du Lac this week Grothman told WFDL news that a wall is necessary to keep illegal immigrants out of the United States. “We absolutely need a wall,” Grothman said. “Every year in this country we swear in about 700,000 new citizens. So its not like we are being xenophobic here for keeping people out. We’re letting hundreds of thousands of people into this country provided they do it legally.” President Trump had campaigned saying Mexico would pay for the wall, but is now asking U.S. taxpayers to pay up to $5 billion for a wall. A partial government shutdown is in its third week over Trump’s demand for money to build the wall.
