The Fond du Lac County executive says the county board could take action to extend a county sales tax as early as their February meeting. The county held its final public information meeting last month on extending the tax which is scheduled to sunset at the end of 2021. The tax was enacted nine years ago as part of an incentive package to keep Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac. County executive Al Buechel says he is recommending the tax be extended. Buechel says without the sales tax the county would either have to borrow to pay for highway projects or they wouldn’t get done. The county board will not have a January meeting.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
