The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says this week’s ATV fatality on Lake Winnebago is a tragic reminder of how dangerous the ice conditions are even with the recent cold snap. Fond du Lac funeral home director Peter Zacherl died after his ATV broke through thin ice. Sheriff’s captain Bill Tadych says its going to take several days of very cold weather to build more stable ice conditions on the lake. “If you’re not familiar with the area and even if you are, ice conditions can change within hours or minutes,” Tadych told WFDL news. “We were hopeful this cold weather was going to solidfy everything but there was enough wind to push this area open.” Tadych says anyone who goes out on the ice should wear a life jacket.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
