The deadly deep freeze enveloping the Midwest sent temperatures plunging this week to rival some of the most frigid spots in the world. For a second day in a row schools throughout southern Wisconsin are closed Thursday including all schools in Fond du Lac and Dodge counties. National Weather Service meteorologist Rebecca Rogers says for the second night in a row the overnight low is in the mid 20s below zero. Rogers says temperatures in parts of Wisconsin were lower this week than in Antarctica at the South Pole. The U.S. Postal Service even took the rare step of suspending mail delivery across much of the region. The bitter cold is the result of a split in the polar vortex that allowed temperatures to drop much farther south than normal. All Fond du Lac County offices are reopening at 10am Thursday except the Clerk of Courts and Treasurer’s offices. They are opening at 8am Thursday.
