Strong winds, snow and icy
roads made for treacherous travel conditions Sunday on roads throughout east central Wisconsin including Interstate 41. White out conditions are being blamed for a fatal chain reaction crash on southbound Interstate 41 near Neenah involving more than 30 vehicles. Authorities say at least one person was killed and several people were injured in the crash. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office confirms one fatality and says several other injured people have been taken to hospitals. Neenah police said buses were being used to get people off the highway and to safe locations. Fond du lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says white out conditions made travel nearly impossible on 41 resulting in 25 vehicle run-offs including 13 property damage crashes. “You get into some of the open areas of the county and its complete white out conditions,” Waldschmidt told WFDL news. I-41 was closed at Highway N north of Fond du Lac due to a jack-knifed semi. Waldschmidt says a sheriff’s squad that was assisting a motorist in the ditch on 41 near F was struck by a vehicle. The deputy and driver of the striking vehicle were transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. There were 15 vehicle run-offs in Dodge County.
