A Portage man is back in the Fond du lac County Jail following a suicide attempt Monday morning. Jail administrator Jim Borgen tells WFDL news early Monday morning 32 year old Troy Kratz attempted to strangle himself with his underwear in his jail cell. Jail staff observed him on camera and stopped the attempt. Kratz was reported to be semi-conscious when he was transported to St. Agnes Hospital. He was returned to the jail several hours later. Borgen says Kratz will be monitored closer as a precaution. Kratz is in jail charged with battery to a law enforcement officer. He is accused of punching a sheriff’s deputy and police officer in the face following a traffic stop last year. The police officer suffered a broken elbow. Last month a judge ordered a competency evaluation for Kratz.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
