5-7-19 skimming conviction-fdl police react

todayMay 7, 2019

The assistant Fond du Lac police chief says he hopes the conviction of a Romanian immigrant in a statewide credit card skimming scheme sends a strong message.   Catalin Capanu faces more than 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in July for wire fraud and theft from a financial institution.  Assistant police chief Steve Klein says Capanu and an accomplice were arrested last summer after a Fond du Lac resident called police about  suspicious behavior at a Marine Credit Union ATM.  Klein says the men were part of a group of about 30 people involved in a Romanian crime ring traveling the country stealing credit and debit information by using skimming devices.
