5-8-19 governor tony evers goes “between the lines”

todayMay 8, 2019

Despite criticism from Republicans, Wisconsin Democratic governor Tony Evers says he thinks his proposed budget is in good shape.  Governor Evers made the comments in an exclusive interview on AM 1170s Between the Lines program.  Evers says his budget meets the needs of the state and is reflected in recent polls.  “I have been hearing that there are some real priorities that they want the Republican legislature to take on in the Joint Finance Committee.  Health care, making sure we take the expanded Medicaid opportunities that are available to us, as well as making sure we fix the pot holes in the state, that we have a good infrastructure.”     Evers says despite all of the rhetoric he thinks in the end Republican lawmakers will accept federal Medicaid expansion.  “Yeah I do, because even from a political point of view, they have to be re-elected.  But more importantly people in Wisconsin say they want more affordable and accessible health care and 70 percent of them want this,”  Evers said.  As the former state superintendent of Public Instruction, Evers says education funding is a priority in his budget.   “People are expecting better things from us.  They don’t believe at the local level they need to keep going to referendum to keep the doors open to their schools.”
