5-8-19 hobbs woods trail washed out by spring rain

todayMay 8, 2019

The recent heavy rain and snowmelt and erosion continues to take its toll on Fond du Lac County’s most popular recreation trail  as county officials continue to debate what to do about maintaining the trail.   A recent hike through Hobbs Woods south of Fond du Lac reveals a washed out lower trail that used to run along the creek raising questions about when the county is going to spend money to make upgrades and improvements to the trail?   “Is there a plan in place?  The answer is no,” Fond du Lac County executive Al Buechel told WFDL news.  “We had a lot of heavy water, snowmelt, the rain,  and that eroded a lot of soil across the county.”  Buechel says another problem is that the park is overused, raising questions about whether it would be wise to spend money budgeted to expand a parking lot or if that would just compound the problem.   Buechel says the county is always looking for new park land to purchase.  He says finding something unique, like Hobbs Woods, is difficult.
