The Arc Wisconsin is speaking out in support of governor Tony Evers’ budget plan to boost care for children with disabilities and special education funding. State director Lisa Pugh says The Arc supports the governor’s budget that would eliminate a waiting list for a program that serves children with disabilities. The governor wants to pay for the programs by accepting federal money to expand Medicaid. Pugh says Medicaid expansion will ensure that about 82,000 low income people have access to health insurance through Medicaid. Pugh says The Arc also supports the governor’s budget proposal to boost funding for special education. A new report shows special education costs eligible for state aid increased by 18 percent to $1.4 billion in the last decade. At the same time, the state’s primary source for special education funding remained flat at $369 million per year.
