A Democratic member of the legislature’s Jt. Finance committee says Republican lawmakers are turning their backs on a clean water drinking crisis in Wisconsin. State representative Chris Taylor of Madison is reacting to the Republican controlled committee rejecting a number of clean water initiatives proposed by governor Tony Evers. Taylor criticized Republicans for not restoring scientific research through the creation of the Natural Rescources Science Bureau and neglecting to expand the well compensation grant program for families dealing with contaminated wells. “It was really short-sighted, negligent inaction,” Taylor told AM 1170s Between the Lines program. Republican state representative Mark Born of Beaver Dam says the new science bureau is unnecessary. “We didn’t see any reason to create another department and adding more employees,” Born told WFDL news. Born also says he’s not supportive of increased fees on large dairy operations known as CAFOs. The committee will discuss proposed increased CAFO regulation when it takes up the Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection budget.
